The Perrin Technique is an osteopathic approach developed by Dr. Raymond Perrin in 1989 for treating chronic conditions like Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), fibromyalgia, and more recently, Long COVID. This manual therapy is based on the theory that these conditions are caused by impaired function of the lymphatic and “glymphatic” systems, leading to toxin buildup in the central nervous system. The technique involves gentle massage, spinal mobilizations, and cranial techniques aimed at manually draining toxins from the cerebrospinal fluid into the lymphatic system and ultimately into the blood for detoxification by the liver. Dr. Perrin identified five physical signs he believes are consistently present in ME/CFS patients, which can aid in diagnosis. While initially controversial, recent scientific discoveries have lent support to some of Dr. Perrin’s theories, particularly regarding brain lymphatics. The Perrin Technique has gained recognition among patients, being voted the third most preferred treatment by ME Association patients in 2010, and is currently being researched for its potential in treating Long COVID symptoms.
