Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialized form of gentle massage designed to stimulate the flow of lymph fluid throughout the body. Developed in the 1930s by Dr. Emil Vodder, this technique uses light, rhythmic strokes to encourage the movement of lymph from congested areas into functioning lymph vessels. MLD is particularly beneficial for individuals with lymphedema, a condition characterized by swelling due to a buildup of lymphatic fluid. It can also help with post-surgical swelling, chronic venous insufficiency, and certain inflammatory conditions. The massage typically begins with treating unaffected areas to create space for fluid from congested regions to flow. While it’s often performed by trained therapists, simplified versions can be taught to patients for self-administration at home. MLD is frequently used as part of a comprehensive treatment approach called Complete Decongestive Therapy, which may also include compression garments, exercise, and skin care
